Okay, here’s the reality: all of you were born.
But do you know anything about birth? A large percentage of
people will go on to give birth or become a parent, but so few people
really know anything about
how we all got here. And why the journey of birth is really
important. That’s because birth happens behind closed doors.
For most people, the only time they’ve ever ‘seen’ birth is on TV, and – well –
somewhere deep down, you know birth doesn’t happen in the time span of
a 30-minute sit-com and it’s not always so dramatic as portrayed on
ER. (And if you do think that birth happens like on TV, then you
REALLY need to attend this class!)
WHAT: In this class we will explore the
brilliant
design of the birth process, and how it is designed for the survival
of women and babies even if no one else is present (and why it's even
better if someone is present). We'll look at the
amazing
hormones that help women to give birth, prepare a baby to breathe,
turn a woman into a mother, and make babies look to other humans to
care for them. And I'll share with you
why birth is not
complete once the baby is out - there are two more steps for the baby
to be completely born into this world!
WHY: This class isn't just about natural birth,
vaginal birth, or going medication-free. I want everybody to
know how to give birth with an epidural or cesarean in a way that best
supports the baby being born, and the parents becoming parents.
I'll give you tips on what parents can do when using pain medications
or planning a cesarean birth so it will feel like a special day - a
birthday - instead of only a medical procedure.
WHO: This class is for anyone who
has ever been born. Or for anyone who might ever give birth or
become a parent. It's for teens (I sure wish I had this class
when I was in high school!). It's for adults and grandparents.
AND, if you are a medical or nursing student, this
class will teach you about the normal parts of birth that
aren't
covered in medical or nursing school. It will teach you about
the emotional and spiritual aspects of birth that will help you become
a truly holistic healthcare practitioner. If you are
interested in women's health, pediatric care, or becoming a doula or
midwife, this is a great introductory course for you!
PLUS: You'll see some gorgeous birth scenes that aren't
like anything you've ever seen on TV, and you'll get to ask tons of
questions so that you'll finally understand what the fuss is all
about.
WHAT IT'S NOT: This is not a
childbirth preparation class. This is a great introduction for
pregnant couples to get an idea of why and how birth works, but we do
not cover positions for labor, coping techniques (such as breathing
methods), or decision-making in this class.
