BREASTFEEDING BASICS
Part of the After-Birth Series
Breastfeeding is a natural, instinctive process, right? Yes! So it should be an easy and carefree process to start, right? No! Even though babies and mothers are born with the innate reflexes, hormones and physiology to breastfeed, how to breastfeed has to be learned by both baby and mother together. Each unique nursing dyad (mother-baby pair) is a new relationship, and relationships take effort, time, and understanding to build. Even if you've nursed a child before, you've never nursed this child before. Getting breastfeeding off to a good start requires some information and knowledge before your baby's lips touch your breasts.
In this 3-hour evening class, learn about the myriad benefits of breastfeeding. Learn how the breasts work to make milk, how your baby gets milk out of your breasts, and how to know if your baby is getting enough milk. Learn tricks to work with and enhance your baby's innate instincts to nurse, and keep your baby alert if s/he is a 'sleepy' baby. Most important, learn the 3 basics of successful nursing:
Correct Positioning
Correct Latch
Correct Support
Try out different positions for holding your baby to nurse, what a good latch looks like, and why it matters. Discuss common breastfeeding problems and how to avoid and treat them. Breast pumping, breast milk storage, and introducing bottles will also be covered in this class.
This class is designed to be taken during pregnancy, before your baby arrives, and is designed for both a woman and her partner to attend. Class fee is $45 per couple.
This class is taught by Carrie Kenner or Alissa Wehrman
